How The Program Works

world with airplane representing places where people volunteer abroad

How do I begin?

  • Each month we accept 10 volunteers into our program.  Fill out an application & we’ll book a call to schedule a time for an interview.  Once you’re accepted we’ll place you into the education or entrepreneurship project track for the virtual volunteer program. We’ll also help you decide whether a 1, 2 or 3-month virtual volunteer experience is best for your needs.

What exactly is included in the program?

You’ll access 1,2 or 3-month virtual volunteer project coaching where a team works with you to design an online training, campaign or resource template for an education or entrepreneurship project with the community partner in Tanzania. In addition to weekly Zooms with your volunteer coaching team, you’ll receive cultural  videos from Tanzania & a  group chat with the community partner FUWAVITA, who support women living with disabilities in Tanzania.

You’ll also select from one of the following:  Assistance planning your volunteer trip & full 24/7 support when volunteering in Tanzania or a 1-month remote add on where we work with you to take your project and share it in a resume, personal statement or application.

Who will I be volunteering with?

  • The exciting part of being a small group is developing an amazing network of peers.

  • Because each month we have volunteers working on education & entrepreneurship projects you get the unique opportunity to collaborate with people who are equally as passionate about empowering women living with a disability in Tanzania.

Ps. Bc we only accept 10 people per month, we focus on finding the right match for people who share our commitment & values

Why do you like the “give work” model of volunteering?

  • Helping is kind of basic. It makes you the savior & it causes communities to feel dependent on the “helper” waiting to save the day or “empower others.”

  • We don’t do this. We co- collaborate with volunteers & specific orgs to create a genuinely meaningful experience based on mutual sharing.

If you wanna play savior…we suggest checking out other options.

Why is virtual volunteering included in each of your volunteer programs?

  • Virtual volunteering gives you the chance to understand the culture & language of Tanzania while building connections and designing a unique project so that your experience can be meaningful!

  • You’ll get the chance to work with a team to design an education or entrepreneurship volunteer project that is unique to you. You’ll also get a chance to learn more about the culture of Tanzania, Kiswahili language and community issues that impact people living with a disability in Tanzania through videos, Zooms and group chats!

What is the difference between the 1, 2 and 3-month virtual volunteer program?

  • The 1-month program gives you a month of coaching in designing your project, accessing videos from Tanzania and learning Swahili.

  • For the 2 and 3-month virtual volunteer program you’ll be able to design a deeper virtual volunteer project & get more access to language & cultural classes from Tanzania.

I’m curious to get started right away (free is always good). Suggestions!?

It’s cool. We love free too.

Ethical  & Accessible Volunteering +  Impact

sketched pair of five hearts that represents the different volunteer projects

How will I know if the project I am working on is sustainable?

  • So here is the deal. There is no one-of-a-kind project. Each one is specifically crafted by you, the NGO partner & the support team at A Tree That Grows. We do run "long-term projects” (ie: sponsor a child) that make the organizations dependent on you or us.

  • The community partner houses the projects and works with other groups in the country to disseminate and share them. They are kept in a best-practices database so they can be used in the future.

How do you make & measure your impact

  • We measure our impact by the number of people living with a disability across Tanzania accessing your virtual project + we design individual impact goals for each project

  •   The number of new remote interns we can support in Tanzania design their own projects

  • The amount of money we put back into the hands of women led community organizations

What do you mean by accessible volunteering?

  • A Tree That Grows believes strongly in accessible volunteer travel for all people and because we only work with a small number of volunteers, we’ll work with you to ensure any necessary accommodations are met to ensure a successful volunteer experience.

  • We also work with sign language interpreters in Tanzania to maximize inclusion for all participants

Pricing, Guarantee & Scholarship Qs.

How does your pricing work?

  • We are paid for:  volunteer project coaching, project personalization, creating exclusive content, volunteer travel support & developing master classes for your volunteer experience. We’re also paid for in-country volunteer support or helping you share your project on a resume, application or personal statement.

  • Our partner is paid for:  Project guidance & supervision, live sessions + master classes on her work

  • We also offer a money back guarantee, which we’re proud of. Check out this link for more on our Pricing

How much does it cost?

  • If you pay upfront the remote internship will cost:

 1-month: $1,000

2-month: $1,200

  •  Volunteering for 1 week can cost up to $1,200 & you get limited connection to the country & personalization  in the project.

Do you offer payment plans?

Yes, we offer 12-month payment plans

  • If you pay using  a payment plan fees will be:

    1-month internship: $100 Per Month

    2-month internship: $120 Per Month

    3-month internship: $140 Per Month

 Why isn’t it for free?

  • In order for us to help you take your skills + passion and turn it into a project that changes your life, we need to pay people

  • We also are proud of being to partner with incredible NGOs who earn money through their work with you.

Win win for all.

(If you do not want that type of tailored service, then definitely free is the best option for you)

I want to apply but money is tight…

Any Scholarships?

  • Absolutely. Each year we will offer a few need based scholarships for some outstanding people. 50% of the recipients will be people of color.

I like guarantees. Got any?
